In looking for snowmobiles for sale, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

1.    As a buyer, you have to ask the owner, for any modifications done and also ask about the parts that have been changed. This can sometimes affect the reliability of the vehicle.  Though it is not right to shun away from modified snowmobiles, it can sometimes be the cause of tuning nightmares, especially for a new owner if the previous owner did not do the changes properly.

2.    Check the mileage of the vehicle and find out if it was used in races. Small holes in the wire holes located in the bolts will indicate that the snowmobile has been used for such sports. Chances are the snowmobile has been through some rough rides, driven hard and may have a lot of wear. Discretion should be exercised when looking at these types of used snowmobiles.

3.    Check the brakes, oil seals, suspensions and other mechanisms to see if they are in good working conditions. Also check if there is enough lubrication on the chains and sprockets.

4.    Look for the track’s quality, it must not be so worn out that there is hardly any friction. Also look for any holes on the studs- chances are it is in very bad condition.

5.    Check the skis for the used snowmobiles condition. If it’s steel and has dents chances are you will have to have it fixed and this will be an added cost for you. Negotiate if they can lower their asking price.

6.    If possible, test-drive the snowmobile. It is wise to bring your own gear for this event. Make sure that the starter starts properly. Ask the owner not to start the vehicle before hand to ensure an easy start.

Lastly, for first time owners or those who are learning to ride a snowmobile it is a good idea to start and practice in a used snowmobile. Then once you master the mechanics of riding a snowmobile you will be ready to spend a little more on a new one.
